Anticipating

Well, December is just around the corner and I can’t help thinking about the arrival of the Christ child; God in human flesh. Jesus: fully God, and fully man. It’s called the hypostatic union and it’s something that is incredibly important to us as believers. The apostle Paul wrote in Colossians 2, that “in Christ all the fullness of the deity lives in bodily form”. John in his gospel puts it this way, “in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God”… and He came down. “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him?” Why? They didn’t recognize Him. They didn’t recognize their Messiah! And this kind of amazes us! Again why?

We know what Isaiah wrote. We know what is found in the Psalms, and in the gospels. As written in Colossians and even in Philippians 2:6-8, “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”

The Messiah had come. The One the prophets spoke of. The one Simeon and Anna were waiting for. The One the Samaritan woman know of. Jesus had come and His arrival, although not spectacular, was not undercover either. John faithfully records how God sent a forerunner, a man who would bear witness; who would testify concerning the light. Quite literally, John the Baptist’s life mission was to call people to repentance and get ready for the Messiah because He was coming. And when Jesus came, John baptized Him. As Jesus came out of the water, a dove descended upon Him; the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. And God said, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased”. It was God’s way of saying, “Look, look, this is my son”! Still many missed it!

Now scripture tells us that as Christ came the first time, and He will come again. Perhaps the question we need to ask ourselves is, “Will we be ready?” Will we be ready for His second coming or will we be caught by surprise as many were at His first coming? Jesus is the Messiah and He WILL come again.
